UTRCRC Hamburger Hills Hammer-Down, April 9th.

Yes, we had it all. We had wind, rain, snow, hail, blue sky, calm, cold, and everything in between. But that didn't stop the UTRCRC from having a BLAST out at Hamburger Hills. The rain, snow and hail really wasn't that bad wasn't bad. The dirt road was graveled and kind of sandy, so mud wasn't an issue. What the worst thing out there Saturday was the cold. It got down right frigged every so often. But we persevered.

We had a real good turnout considering the weather. And those that braved the conditions had a great time. Many guys told me during the course of the day, that Hamburger Hills is now probably one of their favorite places to crawl.

(A small note about Hamburger Hills: The rock out there looks like petrified hamburger, hence the name. With it’s rough bumped and pebbles surface almost any tire will grip on this stuff, even as wet as it was Saturday. Now I’m not exaggerating one bit when I say this… Crawlers can easily get traction up a 60-75 deg incline there…. REALLY, there is no exaggeration in this statement. Just ask anyone that was out there.)

UTRCRC 1st Annual Moab RC Crawl-Off, September 25th.

The UTRCRC 1st Annual Moab RC Crawl-Off, was again a great turn out yet with 16 crawlers competing. We had a great time and really appreciate everyone that showed up to compete and support this event. In Moab UTRCRC had a first, we had our first ever Female competitors Yes compatitors, there were two. Christina Guhman and Jillian W. They both did great and showed the men that girls could be competitive in RC Crawling too (unfortunately Jillian's TXT-1 broke a driveline durring her first run). Also we want to give a special Thank you to all those that traveled for out of state. And let us not forget our kind sponcers for providing the prise packages; West Valley Hobbies (a full set of Imex K-Rock Tires), World Class Hobbies (Battery pack and motor spray). UTRCRC also donated one of our v2 TEAM Chassis.

On with the results.

Well… We thought we would call Course 1, Crack-O-Rama. This course turned out to be a great all around course. Some sections were great for long wheel base rigs, some sections were great for wide rigs, some sections were great for narrow rigs.and some were great for short wheel base rigs. Unfortunately for me there was one section that was not kind at all to my type of rig - long whellbase, narrow width and narrowed tires. It ate the Dusty alive, I should have left the BFTs on.

Among other ledges and off-camber steps, the course had six different cracks that had to be navigated. Each Crack favored a different type of rig set-up. One of these cracks in the middle of the course was especialy EVIL... Like the fruit of the Devil. Those that were there know the one I'm talking about. The was also a nice little (narrow) ledge your had to ride that was cursed all day. All in all it was a great course with a variety of obsticals to hate and love.

Course 1 (Crack-O-Rama):
1 Teardrop Light/Kevin Guhman – 3 (penalties: 1 reverse, 2 boundary)
2 4L/Andy Heyd – 7 (penalties: 6 reposition, 1 gate marker penalties)
3 Clodmod/Courtney Simmions - 9 (penalties: 2 reverse, 3 reposition, 3 gate marker)
4 Grinder/Troy Benton – 10 (penalties: 1 reverse, 2 rollover, 3 reposition, 3 gate marker, 1 boundary)
4 MTPA Mach 1/Christina Guhman – 10 (penalties: 1 reverse, 2 rollover, 2 reposition, 3 gate marker, 2 boundary)
6 Cliff Diver/Rory Pester – 11 (penalties: 3 reverse, 1 rollover, 2 reposition, 2 gate marker, 3 boundary)
6 The Duke/Chris Ladd – 11 (penalties: 1 reverse, 2 rollover, 3 reposition, 4 gate marker, 1 boundary)
8 Sleepless/Jason Kallas – 13 (penalties: 1 reverse, 1 rollover, 2 reposition, 7 gate marker, 2 boundary)
9 Three B/Mike Thompson – 16 (penalties: 4 reverse, 4 reposition, 3 gate marker, 4 boundery, 1 time penalty)
9 Rainmaker/Tim Dodd – 16 (penalties: 5 reverse, 3 reposition, 2 gate marker, 3 boundery, 2 time penalty, 1 maximum)
10 Rock v2/Ty Goudl – 28 (penalties: 5 reverse, 2 rollover, 6 reposition, 4 gate marker, 11 boundary)
11 EX-CB/James Dodd – 29 (penalties: 3 reverse, 7 rollover, 17 reposition, 1 gate marker, DNF)
12 TXT/Jillian W. – 29 (penalties: 3 reverse, 1 rollover, 12 reposition, 6 gate marker, 2 boundary, 1 maximum, DNF)

UTRCRC Scores (we were not counted towards the official scoring due to the fact we solicited the prizes involved)
00 Furless v2/Brett Thorne – 5 (penalties: 1 rollover, 2 gate marker, 2 boundary)
00 Martha v2/Jason Craig – 7 (penalties: 5 reverse, 1 reposition, 1 gate marker)
00 Dust v2/Matt Davis – 12 (penalties: 2 reverse, 1 rollover, 1 reposition, 1 gate marker, 4 boundery, 1 maximum)

Course 2, Easy Chair. Again we (the course builders) handed the task of designing the second course to all the rest of the competitors. So they took the chalk and gate markers and a few of the guys got to it.

This course ended up as a fun as it first looked challenging. Once on the course it was easyer than it first looked. Even the 3 foot cliff dropped proved to be easyer than expected. Low scores were dominant on this course with 4 zero scores and 3 scores of one, with the highes score being 12. It was a great end of the day course to wind down and relax after an intense first round.

Course 2 (Easy Chair):
1 4L/Andy Heyd – 0
2 Teardrop Light/Kevin Guhman – 0
3 Grinder/Troy Benton – 1 (penalties: 1 gate marker)
4 Sleepless/Jason Kallas – 1 (penalties: 1 gate marker)

Well… We thought we would call Course 1, Sunday in the Park. The reason being was we set out to make an easier more relaxed first course. We knew we would have a few first-time competitors, so we thought we would make this course like a walk in the park. Needless to say, it didn’t turn out that way.

The course had a combination of obstacles; some favored short wheelbases, some favored the long ones. Obstacles that looked easy turned out to be a challenge for many crawlers. There were quite a few off-camber sections and some real frame twisters. The more patient drivers prevailed on “Sunday in the Park”; with a combination of a steady throttle finger, watchful eye and patients in finding that perfect line. Maybe we should have called it Sunday in the Park FROM HELL.

Colt Giles, Carl Egbert, Collin Dodd, Chris P, Tase Thompson, Bret Elwood, and Jeffy Poo had to leave early or chose not to compete or broke on course 1 so we had no course 2 score for them.

Course 2, Road to Damnation. In he past we (the course builders) have heard a few friendly complaints/verbal jabs that we build our courses so we, ourselves will do well in the competition, insomuch catering all the pervious courses to our strengths. So the second course we decided to hand the task of designing the second course to all the rest of the competitors. So we handed the chalk and gate markers to a few of the guys and said get to it.

About 10 of the guys, some veterans, some green to crawling, started marking out course 2. We sat back and kept out mouths shut and let them build. It was fun to watch them plan, bicker, layout, complain, disagree, and finally agree on all kinds of lines and obstacles. Within 15-20 minutes the Road to Damnation was complete. Boy did it live up to its name. There were lines and obstacles that we have never thought possible. Even before the unfortunate first competitor had completed the first few gates, we all new we were in for on of the most challenging course ever.

Sections of the course quickly received names like: The Pit, Bitch Chute, and The Impossible Falls. Only 3 competitors made it through the course with out taking a gate by-pass penalty. We even had to temporarily modify our gate by-pass rule so a few guys could finish the course. I think it worked out great to have all the crawlers come together and layout a course. It was an extremely hard course and a very fun one.

1 Martha Stewart v2/Jason Craig – 15

UTRCRC Rumble in the Rocks #3 Saturday July 17th.

The UTRCRC Rumble in the Rocks 3 was our biggest turn out yet with 11 crawlers competing (and the hottest). We did have a couple more crawlers show up but they chose to support us instead of compete, which is great too, maybe next time. We had a great time and really appreciate everyone that showed up to compete and support this event. Also we want to give a special Thank you to Steven Wykroff, Chris Ladd and Andy Heyd for foregoing sleep and making the trek from Colorado. It was great to meet Steve and see Andy and Chris again. It wouldn’t have been the same with out you guys.

Congratulation to Jason Craig for winning the top spot. Although he was using for the first time, that cheater radio, the Futaba 3pj Super. We all could see the great advantage you can have with 4 wheel independent steering. Friendly complaints were numerous that using that radio was cheating. Of course when we all get one it won’t be cheating, it will be the best thing ever. It’s funny how that works.

Course 1 (The Waterfall):
1 Martha Stewart/Jason Craig – 6 (6 gate marker penalties)
2 The Furless Yeti/Brett Thorne – 7 (7 gate marker penalties)
3 The Dust Guppy/Matt Davis - 16 (penalties: 1 reverse, 6 rollover, 4 gate marker, 1 by-pass(5pts.))
4 Decko/Dean Farrington – 18 (penalties: 5 rollover, 2 reposition, 6 gate marker, 1 by-pass)
5 El Capitan/Andy Heyd – 20 (penalties: 2 rollover, 1 reposition, 7 gate marker, 2 by-pass)
6 Sleepless/Jason Kallas – 29 (penalties: 7 rollover, 2 reposition, 5 gate marker, 3 by-pass)
7 Grinder/Troy Benton – 33 (penalties: 1 rollover, 1 reposition, 11 gate marker, 4 by-pass)
8 The Duke/Chris Ladd – 37 (penalties: 1 reverse, 2 reposition, 14 gate marker, 4 by-pass)
9 Luke Duke/Steven Wykoff – 43 (penalties: 1 reverse, 4 rollover, 1 reposition, 10 gate marker, 5 by-pass, 2 time penalty)
10 Necko/Nic Farrington – 51 (penalties: 5 reverse, 1 rollover, 3 reposition, 17 gate marker, 4 by-pass, 1(+1+1)
time penalty)
11 Just-a-MAXX/Scott Okelberry – 57 (penalties: 5 reverse, 6 rollover, 1 reposition, 6 gate marker, 7 by-pass.
1(+1+1) time penalty)

Oh boy… Course 1 was a tough one. The key to this course turned out to be a long wheelbase and grippy tires. At about a 45deg up-hill pitch this course just ate up the crawlers with short wheelbases and lower traction tires. Combine the steep, constant climb, with the fact that the course was set-up on a river run-off with VERY slick and polished rocks, made The Waterfall an extreme challenge.

Course 2 (The Suicide Razor):
1 Martha Stewart/Jason Craig – 8 (penalties: 2 rollover, 3 reposition, 3 gate marker)
1 The Dust Guppy/Matt Davis – 8 (penalties: 4 rollover, 4 gate marker)
3 The Furless Yeti/Brett Thorne – 9 (penalties: 2 rollover, 7 gate marker)
4 Decko/Dean Farrington – 14 (penalties: 4 rollover, 3 reposition, 7 gate marker)
5 El Capitan/Andy Heyd – 16 (penalties: 7 rollover, 1 reposition, 3 gate marker, 1 by-pass)
6 Necko/Nic Farrington – 17 (penalties: 1 reverse, 3 rollover, 4 reposition, 4 gate marker, 1 by-pass)
7 Sleepless/Jason Kallas – 26 (penalties: 2 reverse, 4 rollover, 7 reposition, 8 gate marker, 1 by-pass)
8 Luke Duke/Steven Wykoff – 27 (penalties: 1 reverse, 5 rollover, 5 reposition, 3 by-pass, 1 time penalty)
9 The Duke/Chris Ladd – 28 (penalties: 1 reverse, 9 rollover, 2 reposition, 1 gate marker, 3 by-pass)
Scott Okelberry and Troy Benton had to leave early so we had no course 2 score for them.

Course 2, The Suicide Razor, had it’s own challenges that had to be overcome. The course didn’t really favor a particular wheelbase or any special tire. But with combination of off-camber sections, numerous wheel-sucker holes and precarious cliff edges (scale cliffs of course), made this course a ”drivers course”. Although we soon learned that a lower center of gravity (CG), wider tires and wider tracks did let you drive a little sloppier. Crawlers with these configurations helped them to better hang on to the off-camber faces and straddle those wicked wheel-suckers. Those with higher CGs, narrower tracks and narrower tire widths suffered a bit on The Suicide Razor.

Overall for the day :
1 Martha Stewart/Jason Craig – 14
2 The Furless Yeti/Brett Thorne – 16
3 The Dust Guppy/Matt Davis - 24
4 Decko/Dean Farrington – 32
5 El Capitan/Andy Heyd – 36
6 Sleepless/Jason Kallas – 55
7 The Duke/Chris Ladd – 55
8 Necko/Nic Farrington – 68
9 Luke Duke/Steven Wykoff – 70

UTRCRC Rumble in the Rocks #2 Saturday June 26th.

Saturday June 26th UTRCRC held our 2nd Rumble in the Rocks. We had both a rock crawling competition and also a hill climb competition.

This was a great event! We had a great turnout for both crawlers and spectators. KeninfromlongIsland came out from Arizona and showed that he had the skills to keep up with the Utah chapter.

The course ended up being pretty difficult with a lot of steep shoots and very technical off camber climbs and turns. Everyone brought out there new ideas and techniques (some good, some not) but all really great ideas. One of the newest features was from Martha Stewart. A foldable cutting board as a slide platform on the bottom the crawler. HEHEHEH it worked great though.

We tried out a few new tire combos both on the clod and MAXX style rims. Some worked ...some didn't.

We started out with a large crowd of spectators, spouses and girlfriends. After the first two courses it started to thin out a bit. By the afternoon there were 5 trucks left. it was great that kevin came up, his independent rear steer prooved itself time and again.

We really appreciate everyone coming out and participating. PinchFlats wife did a great job at keeping score and making sure the event went as smoothly as possible. (great burritos too)

Here are the resulls from the crawling event:
1st: Brett Thorn (Furless Yeti/Kaetwo) 10pts
2nd: Kevin Guhman (Kevinlongisland) 14pts
3rd: Jason Craig (Martha Stewart) 20pts
4th: Matt Davis (DustGuppy/PinchFlat) 24pts
5th: Jason Kallas (Hummette) 37pts
and 3 DNFs Dean (surferboy) and Nic (I forget his UN) had to take off early but I'm sure they would have done well (Nic also broke his outdrive). And the 3rd DNF Mike Thompson also had to take off early (his clod was not finished so he drove his stock TXT- very hard to be competitive with no locked diffs)

Here are the resulls from the hill climb event:
1st: Wade Savage
2nd: Jeremiah Savage
3rd: Steven Savage

Thanks again to all that came. You all made it a great day.

UTRCRC Rumble in the Rocks #1 Saturday June 6th.

Saturday June 6th UTRCRC will hold our 1st ever Rumble in the Rocks. We had both a rock crawling competition and also a rockcrawling/hill climb competition.

It was a lot of fun!

We were pleased to see so many drivers from outside of the local cities show up. We have a lot of respect for those that did. There are several drivers here locally that didn't show up (we suspect because there scared) So were're throwing the gauntlet down, and calling out Steve, Cody, Brian and Aaron.

Thanks to all that showed up.

Here are the resulls from the crawling event:
First Place The Furless Yeti (Kaetwo/Brett) with: 430pts
Second Place Nic Farrington with: 415pts
Third Place Clear Boy (Jason Craig) with: 385pts
Forth Place Surferboy/Dean Farrington with: 380pts
Fifth Place The Dust Guppy (PinchFlat/Matt) with: 375pts
Sixth Place Brian Tanner (Nitro Savage) with: 250pts

We had ALOT of rollovers on this course. Brett and Jason set up a tough one. The course clamed 2 victims, Nic burned out his ESC and Jason broke a link. And there was plenty of rock rash to go around. The Savage didn't do well. It either stalled or literaly LAUNCHED of the obsticals.

Here are the resulls from the hill climb event:
1st Place: Brett with the Furless Yeti
2nd Place: John Child with a Nitro MT
3rd Place: Dean with his Gecko2
4th Place: Matt with the Dust Guppy
